Which social platform should I be on?
So many choices, not enough time.
In a world of limitless options, it can be hard to choose which one is best. This is very true with social media platforms and deciding on where to focus your time and money on as a business. “The reality is that if you’re trying to talk to everyone then you’re really talking to no one.” A good place to start is to ask yourself, “Who are my ideal clients?” Once you have a clear understanding of who they are, then you can move on to figuring out which platforms they spend the most time on. There are several factors that you should consider when deciding which social platforms to spend time on as a business. Let’s discuss the top three factors to consider.
Who is your target audience? Categorize your business or service. Is it a professional service? Are you selling wellness products? Is your audience stay-at-home moms or retirees? This is when it’s a great idea to have a creative brief to spell out the details of your target audience and what they are looking for and needing. What questions might they have about your product or service? Some other things to consider are language and tone of the copy that you create for your target audience. Also, what is their perception of your product or service? Is this a service that they absolutely need like health insurance or is it a fun purchase such as new golf clubs? Even if you’ve had your business for years and think you know who your target audience is, take some time to write it all down and revise as needed.
Where are they spending their time? This is perhaps one of the key pieces of information that you need to consider when choosing the platform to focus time and energy on for your service or product. Where is your ideal client spending the most time? You can do some research online and look for statistics to help you decide or you can do some in-person research with your audience. If you own a shop and interact with your customers often, ask them which platform they use the most and why do they like it?
Where do you like consuming and creating content? Although, I wouldn’t suggest choosing the platform that you like the most, especially if your target audience is different from you, it is important that you pick one that you don’t hate using. Creating quality content consistently gets harder when you view it as a chore and you just don’t enjoy doing it. If it makes sense to use the platform that you enjoy the most for your business, go ahead and focus on that one.
Most importantly, don’t try and grow your business on multiple platforms at once because you will burn out before you see results on any of the platforms. Choose one or two that make the most sense for your business and target audience and stick to it. You can add a platform as your business grows and you have the capital to invest in some help.
